Recently I had the honor of getting my hands on one of my undergraduate professor's new poetry books and I'm so thankful I ordered it. The Sisters is a collection of poems by Jordan Windholz that utilize the magic of fairytales and fables to reimagine the experiences or potential experiences of his daughters as they grow up in a complicated and often frightening world filled with gender violence, environmental disaster, and other catastrophes. As an avid lover of fairytales, this collection really spoke to my interests while also commenting on the current reality of the world we live in - one that is often dangerous and challenging for young women to move through. The collection's strongest element is the way it portrays the relationship between the sisters: as a bond that can help them move through life, one that is hopefully unbreakable. The pieces take the form of prose poems, which are incredible readable with beautiful, moving language. I devoured the collection in one sitting.
My personal favorite poem is "The Sisters as Regicides," which imagines the sisters as king killers, reclaiming themselves in the face of men who might try to control them and their bodies.
